The question comes up often. Why gold-filled?
It wasn't by chance, and it wasn't by default. The research took time. Gold-filled was the obvious answer.
What it actually is

Gold-filled — as it's known in the US, where it originates — is still relatively unfamiliar in France. Traditional jewellers tend to favour gold-plated, which is more widely recognised.
In practice, gold-filled consists of a brass core onto which a thick layer of 14-carat gold is bonded under heat and pressure. It's not a simple gold coating applied to the surface — it's a solid mechanical bond that makes the gold an integral part of the piece. Gold represents at least 5% of the total weight of the jewellery, which is substantial. On Vaniala studs, the 14k GF 1/20 hallmark guarantees exactly that.
The real difference from gold-plated
Gold-plated is a thin layer of gold deposited onto a base metal through an electrochemical process. Very thin — just a few microns. The result looks beautiful at first, but is fragile over time. Water, sweat, perfume, friction — all of it accelerates wear and eventually reveals the metal beneath.
Gold-filled, on the other hand, is made by compressing and rolling the gold into the base metal. This process has one major advantage: it is highly durable, virtually impervious to wear.
Simply put: gold-plated ages, tarnishes, peels. Gold-filled holds up over time.
What this means in practice
Durability, first. A piece of 14-carat gold-filled jewellery can last a lifetime under normal conditions.
Skin tolerance, next. Gold-filled is particularly well-suited to sensitive skin, unlike gold-plated. The thick, solid 14-carat gold layer provides effective insulation from the core material, which can cause allergic reactions.
Price, finally. Between solid gold — beautiful but out of reach — and gold-plated — affordable but fragile — gold-filled is an excellent compromise. More durable and better tolerated than gold-plated, far more affordable than solid gold.
